Malware intrusions, data breaches, ransomed access, and cyber-attacks are on the rise and no industry is immune. Whenever a customer taps, swipes, or dips a credit card, operators must be assured that the transaction, as well as customer data, is protected from unauthorized access or compromise. This must attend session will provide insights into network threats, industry standards and best practices, and detection and prevention strategies to ensure your payment devices and your company are compliant with Payment Card Industry (PCI) standards. Come learn the requirements necessary to strengthen cybersecurity in the vending, OCS, and micro-market channels.

Michael Kasavana, Ph.D
MSU/NAMA Endowed Professor Emeritus, Moderator

Michael L. Kasavana, Ph.D., is the Emeritus NAMA Endowed Professor in Hospitality Business, School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University, having retired from MSU after nearly four decades of teaching and research. He holds CHTP (Certified Hospitality Technology Professional) and NCE5 (NAMA Certified Executive) certifications.

Dr. Kasavana was named the 2011 NAMA Industry Person of the Year and is a recipient of the MSU Distinguished Faculty Award. In addition, he was inducted into the HFTP International Technology Hall of Fame and was presented the Distinguished Lifetime Achievements Award from FS/TEC for foodservice technology innovation. He has authored, or co-authored, several books, including the industry best-selling texts Managing Front Office Operations (9th edition) and Managing Technology in the Hospitality Industry (7th edition) and has published more than two hundred and fifty articles in academic and trade journals.

Dr. Kasavana earned BS (Hotel, Restaurant and Travel Administration), MBA (Finance), and Ph.D. (Management Information Systems) degrees from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst.


Chris Bucolo

Chris Bucolo, MBA, PCIP
Director, Market Strategy, ControlScan, Inc.

Chris Bucolo has over 30 years’ experience in the financial technology and security and compliance industries. In his current role at ControlScan, Chris is responsible for enhancing the company’s payments industry partnerships by identifying and delivering data security and compliance solutions that maximize the relationship between merchant service providers and their customers. Previously he managed business development for the company’s security consulting and security engineering services.

Chris possesses a wealth of knowledge in payment security best practices and merchant relationships, having built and sold his own Independent Sales Organization (ISO), which was one of the first in the country to embrace Payment Card Industry (PCI) security standards and include related services among its core merchant offerings. He is a regular speaker at payments and security industry events, and his commentary has appeared in several notable publications as well as AP stories and live television interviews.

Other organizations Chris has worked with include Sikich LLP (formerly 403 Labs), where he was responsible for partner programs, and Global Payments Inc., where he was charged with building ISO relationships and managing telesales and trade association programs. Chris holds a BA in Government from Lafayette College and an MBA in Finance from St. Joseph’s University.


John Hickey

John started in the vending industry implementing DEX & handhelds in the late 1990’s.  He held leadership roles in IT and operations for Answer Vending in NY City and Next Generation Vending in Boston, MA.  He has lead a diverse team of IT and operations professionals to achieve unmatched service metrics, inventory and cash accountability and data intelligence in vending companies up to 30,000 plus machines.

John possesses a BS in Computer Science from St. John’s University. His education includes Software Development, Information Systems, IT Infrastructure, Lean Six Sigma, Project Management, Change Management, Business Management, Internet marketing and Web technologies.

Since starting Tech 2 Success in 2014 with Don Bates, their team has helped companies of all sizes migrate their systems to the cloud, implement E-Commerce systems for OCS and improve their operational metrics.  The team was a 2015 recipient of the Automatic Merchandiser Pros to Know Award.

Jon Harris assumed the position of Cyber Security Vice President, Compass Group North America in October 2007.

In this role he has responsibility for the administration of information security which includes developing and maintaining the company’s policies and procedures and building executive awareness and commitment towards IT risk mitigation.

Jon joined Compass Group in January 2001 and has over 25 years’ experience in information security working in both the UK and U.S

A serving member of a Governing Body of Chief Data Officers, CIOs, and CISOs to generate innovative, strategic solutions and strengthen the IT, security, and data and analytics functions across all industries.
Jon is married with two children and resides in Charlotte NC

John Reilly
President, Avanti Markets

John Reilly, president of Avanti Markets, brings a wealth of industry knowledge and experience from his previous tenure as Senior Vice President of operations at Coinstar, Chief Global Service Officer for Concordia Coffee Systems, Inc., and Chief Operations Officer of Retail Inkjet Solutions. Mr. Reilly is a practiced and accomplished executive in the POS space. He earned his undergraduate degree from Claremont McKenna College and his M.B.A. from the University of Denver.
